Invisalign in Seoul for Expats and Long-Stay Visitors

Quick answer: Invisalign in Seoul works well for expats and long-stay visitors who will be in Korea for most of the treatment, which typically runs 6-18 months for mild to moderate cases. Expect a scan-based start, check-ups every 6-10 weeks and a retainer at the end. If you may move abroad mid-treatment, agree on a transfer plan before you sign.

Is Invisalign in Seoul a good fit for expats?

Clear aligners suit people who will be based in Seoul for a predictable period: foreign employees, students, military families and spouses on long-stay visas. Because treatment is planned digitally and aligners are worn at home, visits are less frequent than with fixed braces. The main risk for expats is not the treatment itself but leaving Korea before it is finished.

How long does treatment usually take?

  • Minor crowding or spacing: often around 6-9 months
  • Moderate crowding or bite corrections: often 12-18 months
  • Complex cases: may take longer or be better treated with fixed braces

Most plans also include one or more rounds of "refinement" aligners near the end, which can add a few months. Wear time matters: aligners are typically designed to be worn about 20-22 hours a day, and poor wear slows progress.

What happens at the first appointment?

  • An orthodontic exam, photos and panoramic or cephalometric X-rays
  • A 3D intraoral scan instead of putty impressions at many clinics
  • Review of gum health, existing fillings and any wisdom teeth
  • A digital simulation showing planned tooth movements and estimated number of aligners

Ask whether the plan is made by an orthodontic specialist and who checks the simulation. Small tooth-colored attachments are often bonded to teeth to help aligners grip; these are removed at the end. Our first visit guide covers booking, documents and what to bring.

How often are check-ups, and can I travel?

Check-ups are commonly every 6-10 weeks, and some clinics hand out several sets of aligners at once. That flexibility helps people who travel for work or holidays. Before a long trip, ask for enough aligners to cover the gap, plus your previous set as a backup in case one is lost or cracked.

What if I leave Korea before treatment ends?

This is the most important question for expats. Options usually include:

  • Finishing early with a modified plan, accepting a less complete result
  • Transferring to an Invisalign provider abroad, which may involve new fees and a new treatment plan
  • Receiving remaining aligners in advance and having remote check-ins, if the clinic agrees and your case is suitable

Ask in writing how transfers, refunds and records are handled. Request copies of scans, X-rays and the treatment plan so another provider can continue.

How much does Invisalign cost in Seoul?

Orthodontics for cosmetic or alignment reasons is generally uninsured. Advertised/listing prices checked in October 2026, not quotes, suggest roughly:

  • Comprehensive Invisalign, both arches: commonly about KRW 5,000,000-7,000,000, with some listings up to around KRW 9,000,000
  • Limited or partial cases: from about KRW 2,500,000
  • Domestic clear-aligner brands: often cheaper than Invisalign

Check whether the price covers both arches, refinements, retainers, X-rays and check-up fees. Some quotes are for a single arch. Ask whether 10% VAT is included. More pricing context is in our price guide.

Does my insurance cover it?

Expats enrolled in Korean national health insurance should still expect to pay privately, since aligner treatment for appearance is not covered. Some international employer plans include an orthodontic benefit; check age limits, lifetime caps and whether they need a pre-approval form completed by the dentist.

What about retainers after Invisalign?

Teeth tend to drift back after any orthodontic treatment, so retention is essential. Common options are a removable clear retainer, a thin bonded wire behind the front teeth, or both. Retainers are often worn full-time at first and then at night long term. Ask how many retainers are included and the cost of replacements once you are back home.

How do I choose a clinic?

  • Look for orthodontic specialists among the dental clinics in the area
  • Ask how many aligner cases the dentist treats and how refinements are charged
  • Check English communication for check-ups, not just the first consultation
  • Pick a location you can reach easily every few weeks; the areas guide compares neighborhoods and stations

Frequently asked questions

Can I start Invisalign if I am only in Seoul for three months?

Only for very small cases, and only if the clinic agrees to a plan that fits your stay. For most people, a short stay is better spent on a consultation and records.

Do aligners hurt?

Pressure and mild soreness are common for a day or two after each new set. It usually eases quickly.

Can I eat and drink with aligners in?

Aligners are removed for eating and for drinks other than water, then teeth are brushed before putting them back.

Is Invisalign better than braces?

Neither is always better. Aligners are discreet and removable, while braces can be more predictable for some complex movements.
