치과 in Korea are mostly single-specialty dental clinics with in-house CT scanners and digital scanners. Clinics around Apgujeong and Sinsa offer general dentistry, implants, laminate and porcelain veneers, whitening and orthodontics, and many publish non-covered prices on their own sites.

Treatment that needs several stages, such as implants or braces, does not fit easily into a short trip. An implant needs about 3 to 6 months between placing the fixture and fitting the crown, so most foreign patients plan two visits. Veneers and crowns can often be done in 1 to 2 weeks, and same-day crowns are available at clinics with in-house milling.

For insured residents, NHIS covers check-ups, fillings with standard materials, root canals, extractions and one scaling per year from age 19. Implants and dentures are covered for patients aged 65 and over, up to two implants per lifetime, with a 30% copay. Veneers, whitening, Invisalign and most orthodontics are non-covered. Visitors without NHIS pay full price for everything, including scaling.

What to expect

  • The first visit usually includes a panoramic X-ray or CBCT scan, an oral exam and a written treatment plan with prices.
  • Bring your passport and any recent X-rays from home. Earlier scans can help, though most clinics take their own.
  • Payment is usually per stage, for example when the implant is placed and again when the crown is fitted.
  • English is spoken at several Apgujeong clinics. Ask for the treatment plan and materials list in English.
  • Expect numbness for 2 to 4 hours after local anesthesia and mild soreness for a few days after extraction or implant surgery.

Tips for international patients

  • Ask which implant brand is used (Korean brands like Osstem and Dentium are common) and get the implant card for your records.
  • If you are not staying long, ask whether a temporary tooth is included while the implant heals.
  • For veneers, plan at least 2 to 3 visits over 1 to 2 weeks for preparation, try-in and bonding.

Dental treatments

  • Dental Implant: A titanium root placed in the jawbone, left to fuse for 2 to 6 months, then topped with a crown. Most visitors need two trips to Seoul.
  • All-on-4 Implants: Four implants per jaw support a fixed bridge of 10 to 14 teeth. A temporary bridge goes in within days; the final one follows 3 to 6 months later.
  • Porcelain Veneers: Thin ceramic shells bonded to the front of prepared teeth to change colour, shape or small gaps. Usually two visits about 5 to 10 days apart.
  • Minimal-Prep Laminate Veneers: Very thin ceramic laminates bonded with little or no enamel removed. Works for small teeth, gaps and mild shape issues, less so for dark stains.
  • Teeth Whitening: Peroxide gel applied at the clinic, usually in 3 cycles of about 15 minutes. Lightens natural teeth by a few shades; crowns and veneers do not change colour.
  • Invisalign Clear Aligners: Removable clear trays made by Align Technology that move teeth in small steps. Full cases take about 12 to 24 months with check-ups every 6 to 10 weeks.
  • Braces: Brackets and wires that move teeth over about 18 to 30 months. Needs adjustments every 4 to 6 weeks, so it suits residents more than short-term visitors.
  • Dental Crown: A full cap that covers a weakened or root-treated tooth. Zirconia is the common choice in Seoul; many clinics finish in 2 visits or same day with CAD/CAM.
  • Scaling and Cleaning: Ultrasonic removal of tartar above and just below the gum line, then polishing. About 30 to 40 minutes, no recovery time.
  • Root Canal Treatment: Removes infected nerve tissue from inside a tooth, disinfects the canals and seals them. Usually 2 to 4 visits, then a crown on back teeth.
  • Wisdom Tooth Extraction: Removal of third molars that are decayed, infected or stuck. Simple cases take 10 minutes; impacted lower teeth take longer and swell for 3 to 5 days.
  • Gum Contouring: Reshaping excess or uneven gum to show more tooth. Laser cases heal in 1 to 2 weeks; cases needing bone removal take longer before veneers.

Dental in Korea: questions

Can I get an implant done in a single trip?

Usually not. The fixture is placed first and the crown fitted 3 to 6 months later. Some clinics offer immediate loading in suitable cases, but you still need a second visit for the final crown.

How many days do laminate veneers take?

Typically 5 to 10 days from preparation to bonding, with 2 to 3 appointments. Fewer days are possible with in-house labs.

Is scaling covered if I have NHIS?

Yes, one scaling per insurance year (July to June) is covered for insured patients aged 19 and over. Without NHIS you pay the clinic's full fee.

Can I start Invisalign in Seoul and continue at home?

Possible, but you need a dentist at home who will take over. Many people buy the full plan in Seoul and return for check-ups every 2 to 3 months.

Does a 65-year-old foreign resident get implant coverage?

Yes, if enrolled in NHIS. Coverage applies to up to two implants per lifetime with a 30% copay. Bone grafting and some extras may cost more.

What should I eat after wisdom tooth extraction?

Soft, cool food for 2 to 3 days. Avoid alcohol, straws and smoking for at least 3 days to protect the clot.
