산부인과 in Korea handles both gynecology and obstetrics, but clinics in Apgujeong and Sinsa are mostly outpatient gynecology clinics. They offer pelvic exams, ultrasound, Pap smears, STI tests, IUD placement, HPV vaccines and cosmetic gynecology such as labiaplasty. Fertility centers in Gangnam provide egg freezing.

Many clinics are run by women doctors, and some say so in their name or on their site. A first visit is usually a consultation and a transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound, with lab results ready in 2 to 7 days. Same-day IUD placement is possible if you are not pregnant and the doctor agrees.

For insured patients, NHIS covers medically needed exams, ultrasound for diagnosed conditions and cervical cancer screening every two years from age 20. Contraceptive IUDs, HPV vaccines outside the national program, egg freezing and cosmetic gynecology are non-covered. Visitors pay the clinic's full fee.

What to expect

  • Bring your passport and the date of your last period. Note any medicines and previous surgery.
  • Expect a short questionnaire, a consultation and often an ultrasound on the first visit.
  • Results of Pap smear and HPV tests usually take 3 to 7 days. Clinics can send them by email.
  • English is spoken at some Gangnam clinics. A translation app is common elsewhere, so ask in advance.
  • Payment is at the front desk after the visit. Card is fine.

Tips for international patients

  • If you prefer a woman doctor, ask when booking. Many clinics list their doctors on their websites.
  • For IUD placement, book during or just after your period if possible.
  • For egg freezing, plan around 10 to 14 days of injections and monitoring before retrieval.
