What is Braces?

Fixed braces use brackets bonded to each tooth and a wire that is changed and adjusted over time. Korean clinics offer metal, tooth-coloured ceramic and lingual braces, which sit on the inside of the teeth.

Braces can handle larger movements than clear aligners, including rotated teeth and extraction cases, but they need frequent in-person visits.

How it works

The orthodontist takes X-rays including a cephalometric film, photos and a scan, then plans the treatment. Brackets are bonded in one visit. Every 4 to 6 weeks the wire is changed or tightened. Some cases use small mini-screws in the bone as anchors.

Braces questions

Ceramic or metal brackets, which should I choose?

Ceramic brackets are less visible but cost more and can be slightly bulkier. Metal brackets are more durable and easier to clean around.

What are lingual braces?

Brackets bonded on the tongue side of the teeth. They are hidden from view but cost more and can affect speech for the first weeks.

Why does the orthodontist want mini-screws?

Mini-screws give a fixed anchor in the bone so teeth can be moved without unwanted movement elsewhere. They are removed when no longer needed.

Can I move abroad halfway through?

Yes, but the new orthodontist may rebond or change your system and charge a new fee. Request your records and treatment plan before leaving.

Is a monthly fee charged on top?

Many Korean clinics quote a device fee plus a per-visit adjustment fee. Ask for the full expected total.

How long do I wear a retainer?

Usually full-time for some months, then at night for years. Many clinics also bond a thin wire behind the front teeth.
