What is Chuna Therapy?

Chuna is the Korean medicine form of manual therapy. A licensed Korean medicine doctor (hanuisa) uses pressure, stretching and joint thrusts on the spine and pelvis, usually on a sectional chuna table.

Since 2019 chuna for musculoskeletal conditions has been covered by Korean National Health Insurance, which made it common in Gangnam hanuiwon.

How it works

After a consultation the doctor checks posture and range of motion, then applies simple chuna (soft tissue and stretching), complex chuna (joint mobilization and thrusts) or special chuna for joint subluxation. Sessions are often combined with acupuncture, cupping or heat on the same visit.

Chuna Therapy questions

How is chuna different from chiropractic?

Both use spinal manipulation. Chuna is performed by Korean medicine doctors and is often combined with acupuncture and herbal treatment, and it uses a drop table more often.

Does chuna involve the cracking sound?

Complex chuna can include quick thrusts that make a popping sound. Simple chuna is gentler stretching and pressure. Tell the doctor if you prefer no thrusts.

How many insured chuna sessions are allowed per year?

National insurance covers about 20 sessions per patient per year. Additional sessions are paid in full.

Can I do chuna and acupuncture in the same visit?

Yes, this is the most common combination at Korean medicine clinics.

Should I wear anything special?

Wear loose clothing. Many clinics provide a gown or treatment shorts.

How soon will I feel better after chuna?

Some people feel looser right after the first session. For long-standing back pain, doctors usually reassess after 4 to 6 sessions.
