What is Scalp PRP for Hair Loss?

Scalp PRP uses your own concentrated platelets to support hair follicles in thinning areas. Gangnam hair and dermatology clinics often sell it as a package alongside medication or after a transplant.

It works best as an add-on, not as a replacement for finasteride or minoxidil.

How it works

Blood (usually 15 to 30 ml) is drawn and centrifuged to separate platelet-rich plasma. After numbing cream or a nerve block, the plasma is injected in small amounts across the thinning area, either by hand or with an injector gun. Growth factors released by platelets may extend the growth phase of hair follicles.

Who it suits

  • Early androgenetic alopecia in men or women
  • Women who cannot take anti-androgen medication
  • Supporting graft growth after a hair transplant
  • People with shedding who want to add an in-clinic treatment

Who should skip it or wait

  • Completely bald areas with no follicles left
  • Low platelet count, blood cancers or active scalp infection
  • People on anticoagulants who cannot pause them

Side effects and risks

  • Pain during injections
  • Pinpoint bleeding and mild swelling
  • Headache after treatment
  • Infection (rare)
  • No visible benefit in some patients

Aftercare

  • Do not wash your hair for 6 to 12 hours
  • Avoid hair dye or perms for a week
  • Skip saunas and intense exercise for 24 hours
  • Continue prescribed hair loss medication

Planning around your trip

A monthly protocol is hard on a short trip, so consider a single session plus medication, or plan visits around repeat trips.

Scalp PRP for Hair Loss questions

Does scalp PRP hurt?

The injections sting, especially at the front hairline. Numbing cream, vibration devices or a nerve block make it tolerable for most people.

How many PRP sessions before I can judge results?

Most protocols use 3 monthly sessions and assess photographs about 3 months after the last one.

Can scalp PRP replace finasteride?

No. PRP has smaller and less consistent effects. It is best used alongside medication.

Is PRP useful right after a hair transplant?

Some surgeons apply PRP during or after the transplant to support graft healing. Evidence is limited but it is commonly offered.

How is scalp PRP different from exosome scalp injections?

PRP comes from your own blood. Exosome products are made from cultured cells and are regulated as cosmetics in Korea, with less clinical evidence for hair growth.

Can women with postpartum shedding have scalp PRP?

Postpartum shedding usually recovers by itself within 6 to 12 months. PRP is generally not needed and should wait until after breastfeeding.
