What is Dental Crown?

A crown covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It is used after root canal treatment, for teeth with large fillings or cracks, and on top of implants.

Common materials in Korean clinics are zirconia, gold, porcelain fused to metal (PFM) and lithium disilicate (e.max). Gold is still offered for back teeth because it is gentle on opposing teeth.

How it works

The tooth is shaped under local anaesthesia, about 1 to 2 mm all round, and scanned. With in-house CAD/CAM milling the crown can be fitted the same day; otherwise a temporary is worn while a lab makes the final crown in about 3 to 7 days. It is then cemented and the bite adjusted.

Who it suits

  • Teeth after root canal treatment, especially molars
  • Cracked teeth or teeth with large old fillings
  • Replacing worn or failed old crowns
  • Implant restorations

Who should skip it or wait

  • Teeth that only need a small filling
  • Teeth with too little structure left, which may need a post first or extraction
  • Patients with untreated gum disease around the tooth

Side effects and risks

  • Sensitivity or need for root canal later on a live tooth
  • Crown loosening
  • Ceramic chipping
  • Decay starting at the crown margin

Aftercare

  • Avoid sticky food on a temporary crown
  • Floss at the crown edge daily
  • Return if the bite feels high
  • Wear a night guard if you grind

Planning around your trip

If the clinic does not mill crowns in-house, allow about a week between preparation and fitting.

Dental Crown questions

Zirconia or gold for a back molar?

Zirconia is tooth-coloured and strong. Gold needs less tooth removed and wears opposing teeth less, but it is visible and the price follows the gold market.

Can I get a crown in one day?

Yes, at clinics with CAD/CAM milling. Lab-made crowns usually take about 3 to 7 days.

Do I need a root canal before a crown?

Not always. It is needed if the nerve is infected or inflamed. A live tooth can be crowned directly.

What is a PFM crown?

Porcelain fused to metal. It has a metal core with ceramic on top. It is cheaper but a grey line can show at the gum.

How is an e.max crown different from zirconia?

e.max is more translucent and often chosen for front teeth. Zirconia is stronger and common on molars.

Will my crown set off airport scanners?

No. Dental crowns, including metal ones, do not trigger airport security.
