건강검진 is a large part of Korean healthcare. Insured adults get a basic NHIS check every two years, and many add a private package with ultrasound, endoscopy, CT or MRI. Gangnam has several dedicated screening centers and internal medicine clinics that run morning check-ups for walk-in patients who booked ahead.
A package typically takes 3 to 5 hours on a single morning. You fast from the evening before, have blood and urine tests, body measurements, X-ray, ultrasound and gastroscopy, and see a doctor at the end for initial findings. The full written report usually follows in 1 to 3 weeks; some centers prepare English reports.
The national check-up for insured patients is free or low cost. Private packages are non-covered, and prices range widely depending on scans included. Visitors pay the package price and cannot use the national program.
What to expect
- Book at least a few days ahead. Colonoscopy requires bowel prep the evening before and the same morning.
- Fast from 9 pm the night before. Water is usually allowed until midnight.
- Bring your passport and wear clothes that are easy to change. Gowns are provided.
- Sedated endoscopy means you should not drive or sign important documents that day.
- Payment is usually on the day of the exam. Ask whether English reports cost extra.
Tips for international patients
- Choose a package by the tests in it, not by name. Compare whether ultrasound covers thyroid, abdomen and pelvis.
- Ask whether results can be emailed abroad and in what language.
- If a finding needs follow-up, ask for the images on a disc to take home.
