What is Facelift (SMAS Facelift)?

A facelift (안면거상) repositions the deeper SMAS layer that holds facial fat and skin, rather than just pulling the skin. This gives a longer-lasting lift than threads or energy devices.

Apgujeong and Cheongdam have many clinics focused on facelifts for patients in their 40s to 60s. Techniques include SMAS plication, SMASectomy and deep-plane lifting.

How it works

The incision runs from the temple or sideburn, around the front of the ear and into the hairline behind it. The surgeon lifts the skin, tightens or repositions the SMAS, removes excess skin and closes without tension. A small chin incision may be added to treat the neck. Drains are often used for 1 to 2 days.

  • Wear the face garment as directed
  • Stop smoking 4 weeks before and after
  • Avoid hair dye for 4 weeks

What is the difference between SMAS and deep-plane?

SMAS methods tighten the deep layer by folding or trimming it. Deep-plane releases the ligaments under it and moves skin and SMAS as one unit, which suits heavier sagging.

Will the scars show?

They follow the ear and hairline. Most are hard to see after 6 months, though tight ponytails may reveal the area behind the ear.

Do I need blood tests and an ECG?

Yes. Facelift patients usually have blood work, an ECG and sometimes a chest X-ray, especially over 50.

When can I be seen in public?

Most people feel comfortable at 2 to 3 weeks with makeup. Bruising along the neck can last a little longer.

Can I combine it with eyelid surgery?

Yes, upper or lower blepharoplasty is often added. Expect a longer operation and a few more recovery days.
