What is Mole Removal?

Mole removal, called jeom-ppaegi in Korean, is a fast treatment where the dermatologist vaporizes small, flat or slightly raised benign moles with a CO2 laser. Larger or suspicious moles are cut out and sent for pathology.

It is one of the cheapest dermatology treatments in Gangnam, so visitors often remove several small facial moles at once.

How it works

After numbing, the laser removes the mole layer by layer. The small wound is covered with a hydrocolloid patch and heals in 1 to 2 weeks, leaving a pink spot that fades over a few months. Deeper moles may need a second session.

Who it suits

  • Small flat or raised benign moles
  • Seborrheic keratoses
  • Skin tags
  • Small spots on the face

Who should skip it or wait

  • Moles with irregular color or borders
  • Rapidly changing moles
  • Keloid tendency
  • Large moles over 5 mm (often excised instead)

Side effects and risks

  • Small depressed scar
  • Pigment change at the site
  • Partial recurrence
  • Infection if not kept clean

Aftercare

  • Keep the hydrocolloid patch on and change when lifted
  • Avoid sun on healing spots
  • Do not pick scabs
  • Use prescribed ointment

Planning around your trip

You will wear small patches for about a week, so book it at the start of a trip, and avoid swimming until the patches are no longer needed.

Mole Removal questions

Will mole removal leave a scar?

Small moles usually leave a faint pink mark that fades. Deeper moles may leave a small dent.

Should moles be checked for cancer?

Any mole that is changing, bleeding or irregular should be assessed and usually excised for biopsy rather than lasered.

How many moles can be removed in one visit?

Many clinics remove a dozen or more small moles in one session, priced per mole or as a full-face package.

Can a mole come back after laser?

Some deeper moles return partially and need a second session.

What are the patches for?

Hydrocolloid patches keep the wound moist so it heals faster with less scarring.

Can I wear makeup over the patches?

Thin hydrocolloid patches can be covered with light makeup. Keep makeup off the open wound itself.
