What is Thermage FLX?

Thermage FLX is a radiofrequency skin tightening device made by Solta Medical. A treatment tip delivers heat into the deep dermis and the fibrous layer under it, which contracts existing collagen and triggers new collagen over the following months. In Korea it is sold by shot count, usually 300, 600 or 900 shots for the face.

Patients in Apgujeong and Cheongdam usually book it for early jowling, a softer jawline or crepey skin under the chin, often once a year. It suits visitors because it is done in one visit and most people go out to dinner the same evening.

How it works

The FLX tip contacts the skin, measures its impedance and adjusts the energy for each pulse (Solta calls this AccuREP). Each pulse is paired with cooling spray and vibration to protect the surface while the deeper layer reaches tightening temperature.

A grid is drawn on the face and the doctor passes over each zone several times. Some tightening is felt right away; the main change comes as collagen remodels over 2 to 6 months.

Who it suits

  • Mild to moderate jowls and jawline laxity
  • Loose skin under the chin and on the neck
  • People in their 30s to 50s wanting no-downtime tightening
  • Thin faces where HIFU might hollow the cheeks
  • Annual maintenance after a facelift

Who should skip it or wait

  • Pacemaker or implanted electronic device
  • Pregnancy
  • Heavy sagging that needs a facelift
  • Metal implants or recent thread lift in the treatment zone (ask the doctor)

Side effects and risks

  • Temporary redness and swelling
  • Tenderness along the jaw for a few days
  • Small burns or blisters if energy is too high
  • Rare surface dents from fat changes
  • Numb patches that resolve within weeks

Aftercare

  • Use gentle cleanser and moisturizer for 2-3 days
  • Skip saunas, hot yoga and alcohol for 48 hours
  • Apply SPF 50 daily
  • Wait about 2 weeks before filler or another energy device on the same area

Planning around your trip

You can fly the next day, so it fits at the end of a short trip, but book the consultation early because popular Cheongdam clinics fill up on weekends.

Thermage FLX questions

How many shots of Thermage FLX do I need for the full face?

Most Gangnam clinics use 600 shots for the face and 900 shots when the neck or under-chin is included. 300 shots usually covers only the lower face or is used for touch-ups.

Does Thermage FLX hurt?

Each pulse feels like a short hot pinch, strongest over the jawline and bony areas. Numbing cream is standard and the doctor can lower energy in sensitive zones; some clinics offer sleep sedation for an extra fee.

How do I know the tip is genuine?

Ask the clinic to open a sealed tip in front of you and show the shot counter on the screen. Genuine FLX tips are single-use and show a shot count that drops as the treatment progresses.

Should I get Thermage or Ultherapy?

Thermage heats the dermis broadly and tends to suit crepey skin and thin faces. Ultherapy focuses ultrasound on deeper points, including the SMAS, and is often chosen for jowls and brow heaviness; many patients combine both.

Is the price quoted with VAT?

Many Gangnam clinics quote cosmetic prices without the 10% VAT, so ask for the final card price. The tourist VAT refund on cosmetic procedures ended after 2025, and reports in late 2026 still describe its return as under discussion.

Can I combine Thermage FLX with Botox or skin boosters on the same day?

Many clinics do Thermage first and then injections in the same visit. Fillers are usually done after Thermage or delayed by a couple of weeks so the heat does not affect placement.
