What is Vasectomy (No-Scalpel)?

A vasectomy cuts and seals the two vas deferens tubes that carry sperm, so semen no longer contains sperm. Urology clinics in Gangnam perform it as a quick outpatient procedure, usually with the no-scalpel technique.

Prices in Korea are generally lower than in the US or Australia, and the procedure fits easily into a short trip.

How it works

After a local anesthetic injection, the doctor makes a small puncture in the scrotal skin, lifts each vas out, divides it and seals the ends by cautery, clips or ties. The puncture is so small it often needs no stitches. Sperm already in the tubes take about 20 ejaculations or 2 to 3 months to clear.

Who it suits

  • Men certain they do not want future biological children
  • Couples wanting to stop hormonal contraception
  • Men who can stay 1 to 2 days without heavy lifting

Who should skip it or wait

  • Men unsure about future children (reversal is costly and not always successful)
  • Active scrotal skin infection
  • Those needing immediate contraception, as it is not effective right away

Side effects and risks

  • Bruising and scrotal swelling
  • Hematoma
  • Infection at the puncture site
  • Chronic scrotal pain in a small percentage
  • Early failure if the tubes rejoin

Aftercare

  • Wear snug underwear or a scrotal support for a week
  • Ice packs 15 minutes at a time on day 1
  • No sex for about 1 week
  • Use other contraception until a semen test shows no sperm

Planning around your trip

You can fly 1 to 2 days later; get the semen test done at home at 3 months and keep using contraception until then.

Vasectomy (No-Scalpel) questions

How soon after a vasectomy can I fly?

Most men fly after 24 to 48 hours. Wear supportive underwear and walk around on long flights to limit swelling.

Does the price include the follow-up semen test?

Some clinics include one test, others charge separately. If you are leaving Korea, ask for a letter describing the procedure so a lab at home can run the test.

Does vasectomy change testosterone or ejaculation?

No. Testosterone production is unaffected, and sperm make up only a small part of semen volume, so ejaculation looks and feels the same.

Can it be reversed later in Korea?

Microsurgical reversal is possible but costs several times more than the vasectomy, and success falls the longer ago it was done. Treat vasectomy as permanent.

Is it more painful than a dental filling?

Most men compare it to dental work: the local anesthetic sting is the main pain, followed by a dull ache for 1 to 3 days.

How long should I wait before going to the gym?

Light walking is fine immediately. Wait about 7 days before lifting weights, running or cycling.
