What is Prostate Checkup?

A prostate checkup looks for benign enlargement (BPH), inflammation and signs that need cancer testing. Urology clinics in Gangnam can do the full set in one visit.

Men over 50, or over 45 with a family history, often add it to a trip because waiting times are short.

How it works

You fill in the IPSS symptom questionnaire, urinate into a flow meter (uroflowmetry), then the bladder is scanned for leftover urine. A transrectal ultrasound measures prostate volume and looks for abnormal areas. Blood is taken for PSA. A raised PSA leads to discussion of repeat testing, MRI or biopsy.

Who it suits

  • Men over 50 wanting baseline PSA and prostate size
  • Frequent night-time urination or weak stream
  • Men with a father or brother diagnosed with prostate cancer
  • Men on long-term tadalafil or BPH tablets who need review

Who should skip it or wait

  • Acute urinary retention or fever with painful urination, which needs urgent care
  • Men who would not act on a raised PSA and prefer not to screen

Side effects and risks

  • Discomfort during transrectal ultrasound
  • False-positive PSA leading to further tests
  • Overdiagnosis of slow-growing cancers

Aftercare

  • Avoid ejaculation and cycling for 48 hours before PSA testing
  • Arrive with a comfortably full bladder for the flow test
  • Bring a list of current medicines, especially finasteride or dutasteride, which lower PSA

Planning around your trip

Ask for the PSA value and prostate volume in writing so your doctor at home can track them over time.

Prostate Checkup questions

Do I need to prepare for a PSA test?

Avoid ejaculation, long cycling and vigorous exercise for 48 hours before, since they can temporarily raise PSA.

I take finasteride for hair loss. Does that affect my PSA?

Yes. Finasteride and dutasteride roughly halve PSA after about 6 months, so tell the doctor so the result is adjusted.

Is the transrectal ultrasound painful?

It is uncomfortable rather than painful and takes about 5 minutes. Some clinics offer an abdominal scan instead, which is less precise for prostate volume.

What happens if my PSA is high?

Usually a repeat test after a few weeks, then a prostate MRI. Biopsy is considered only if those suggest a significant lesion.

Can I get BPH medication prescribed during the same visit?

Yes. Tamsulosin, silodosin or a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor can be prescribed the same day if the findings support it.

At what age should I start PSA testing?

Many guidelines suggest discussing PSA from age 50, or from 45 with a family history or African ancestry. It is a shared decision, not a must.
