What is Adult Circumcision?

Circumcision removes the foreskin of the penis. Adult men usually have it for a tight foreskin (phimosis), repeated infections of the glans, or hygiene preference.

Korean urology clinics perform it routinely as day surgery, so it fits a trip of about a week.

How it works

The doctor numbs the base of the penis with a nerve block, marks the cut line, removes the foreskin with a scalpel or stapler device, controls bleeding and closes with fine absorbable stitches. A light dressing goes on and you walk out after 30 to 60 minutes of rest.

Who it suits

  • Phimosis that has not improved with steroid cream
  • Recurrent balanitis or foreskin tears
  • Men who prefer circumcision for hygiene or personal reasons

Who should skip it or wait

  • Active infection that has not been treated
  • Bleeding disorders without specialist input
  • Some congenital penile conditions such as hypospadias

Side effects and risks

  • Swelling and bruising
  • Bleeding from a stitch line
  • Infection
  • Uneven skin or excess skin removal
  • Sensitivity change in the glans for some weeks

Aftercare

  • Keep the dressing dry for the first 24 to 48 hours
  • Wear snug underwear to limit movement
  • Take prescribed painkillers, especially at night
  • Avoid swimming and saunas for 3 to 4 weeks

Planning around your trip

Book the procedure early in your trip so the clinic can check the wound at day 3 to 5 before you leave.

Adult Circumcision questions

Is circumcision covered by Korean insurance?

Circumcision for diagnosed phimosis may be partly covered for people enrolled in Korean National Health Insurance. Elective circumcision is paid in full.

Stapler device or traditional stitches?

Stapler devices give an even cut line and shorter operation time, but some leave staples that take 2 to 3 weeks to fall off. Ask which method the clinic uses and why.

How do I handle night-time erections in the first week?

Erections can pull on stitches and hurt. Empty your bladder before bed and ask the doctor about medication if pain wakes you repeatedly.

When can I go back to running or the gym?

Walking is fine from the next day. Wait about 2 weeks for gym work and 4 weeks for contact sports or cycling.

Will there be a visible scar with Adult Circumcision?

A thin circumferential scar line forms and usually fades over months. Where the line sits is a design choice to discuss before surgery.

Can I swim at Han River pools or the beach during recovery?

Wait until the wound has fully closed and stitches have dissolved, usually 3 to 4 weeks, to avoid infection.
