What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation (가슴성형) in Korea mostly uses smooth or micro-textured silicone gel implants. Brands seen in Gangnam include Motiva (Establishment Labs), Mentor, Natrelle and the Korean-made Bellagel.
Korean surgeons often use the armpit (axillary) approach with an endoscope, which avoids a scar on the breast. Fold (inframammary) and areolar incisions are also common.
How it works
The implant is placed in a dual-plane pocket (partly under the chest muscle) or above the muscle under the fascia. Size and profile are chosen from chest width, skin thickness and goals. Some clinics combine implants with fat grafting for a softer upper edge. Drains are used for 1 to 3 days in some cases.
Korea tracks breast implants in a national registry, so keep the implant card and serial numbers.

Side effects and risks
- Capsular contracture
- Implant rupture or rippling
- Asymmetry or implant displacement
- Bleeding or infection
- Rare: BIA-ALCL, a lymphoma linked mainly to macro-textured implants
Aftercare
- Wear the support bra or band as instructed
- No raising arms over the head for 1 to 2 weeks with armpit incisions
- No heavy lifting or chest workouts for 6 weeks
- Follow massage instructions only if your surgeon recommends them for your implant
Planning around your trip
Stay 7 to 10 days: drains come out in 1 to 3 days, stitches around day 7, and long-haul flights are usually allowed after that check.

Breast Augmentation questions
Armpit, fold or areola incision?
The armpit leaves no scar on the breast but limits very large implants. The fold gives the most control and is often preferred for revisions.
Which implant brand is used?
Many Gangnam clinics offer Motiva, Mentor and Bellagel. Ask for the brand, model, size and serial number in writing.
When can I fly after breast augmentation?
Most surgeons allow flying after 7 days. Wear compression socks and walk around during long flights.
Do I need imaging later?
US FDA guidance suggests ultrasound or MRI 5 to 6 years after surgery and then every 2 to 3 years to check for silent rupture.
Is there a VAT refund for foreigners in 2026?
No. The tax refund for foreign cosmetic patients ended on 31 December 2025. A bill to restart it was introduced in August 2026 but had not passed by October.
Can I breastfeed later?
Most women can, particularly with fold or armpit incisions placed under the muscle. Areolar incisions carry a slightly higher risk of affecting milk ducts.
