What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction (유방축소술) is for women whose breast size causes neck, shoulder or back pain, skin irritation under the fold, or difficulty exercising. It also lifts the breast.

It is a bigger operation than augmentation, with longer scars and a longer stay in Seoul.

How it works

Most surgeons use a vertical (lollipop) or anchor (Wise) pattern. Tissue and skin are removed from the lower breast, and the nipple is moved up on a pedicle that keeps its blood supply and often its sensation. Liposuction may refine the sides. Drains are common for a few days.

Breast Reduction questions

Will I still be able to breastfeed?

Many women can partly breastfeed, but the chance is lower than before surgery. Pedicle techniques that keep the nipple attached help.

How small can I go?

The surgeon must leave enough tissue to keep the nipple alive. Discuss a cup size goal, but expect the final call to depend on anatomy.

Do I need a mammogram first?

Over 35 or with any lumps, yes. Many clinics also order a breast ultrasound before surgery.

How visible are the scars?

There is a scar around the areola and one running down to the fold, plus one in the fold with the anchor pattern. They are red for months, then fade.

Is a breast reduction covered by insurance for tourists?

No. Korean insurance only applies to enrolled residents, and even then mostly to functional cases.

How long is the hospital stay with Breast Reduction?

Usually 1 to 2 nights, mainly to watch for bleeding and manage drains.
