Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Removal of excess lower abdominal skin and fat with tightening of the abdominal muscles, leaving a low scar across the bikini line.

Quick facts
  • Korean name: 복부성형
  • Procedure time: 3 to 4 hours
  • Anesthesia: General anesthesia
  • Sessions: 1
  • Downtime: 2 to 4 weeks; walking slightly bent for the first week
  • Results: Flatter profile right away; final at 6 months; scar fades over 12 to 18 months
  • Lasts: Long-lasting with stable weight

What is Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)?

A tummy tuck (복부성형) treats loose skin and stretched muscles after pregnancy or major weight loss, which liposuction alone cannot fix.

A full tummy tuck repositions the navel; a mini tummy tuck treats only below the navel with a shorter scar.

How it works

A hip-to-hip incision is made low enough to sit under underwear. The skin is lifted up to the ribs, the separated rectus muscles (diastasis recti) are stitched together, excess skin is removed and the navel is brought out through a new opening. Liposuction of the flanks is often added. One or two drains are placed.

Who it suits

  • Loose, overhanging lower belly skin
  • Muscle separation after pregnancy
  • Stretch marks below the navel
  • Patients at a stable weight

Who should skip it or wait

  • Women planning future pregnancy
  • Active smokers
  • BMI well above 30 (higher complication rates)
  • Anyone unable to stay 2 weeks

Side effects and risks

  • Seroma
  • Wound healing problems at the centre of the scar
  • Blood clots
  • Numbness of the lower belly
  • Wide or raised scar

Aftercare

  • Wear the binder for 6 weeks
  • Walk bent forward slightly for the first days to protect the closure
  • Use blood clot prevention as prescribed
  • No lifting over 5 kg for 6 weeks

Planning around your trip

Plan at least 14 days in Seoul: 1 to 3 nights in hospital, drains out in about 5 to 7 days, stitches at 10 to 14 days; long flights carry clot risk, so ask about prevention.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) questions

Full or mini tummy tuck?

If loose skin and stretch marks are mainly below the navel and the muscles are fine, a mini tuck may suffice. Separation above the navel needs a full tuck.

How long will I have drains?

Typically 3 to 7 days, until output falls below a set level, so plan your stay around this.

Is it safe to fly home after a tummy tuck?

Major abdominal surgery raises clot risk. Most surgeons advise waiting at least 2 weeks and wearing compression socks, sometimes with blood thinner injections.

Can a C-section scar be removed?

Often yes, because it usually lies within the skin that is removed.

Why is there no price range?

We could not find a reliable published KRW range for Gangnam tummy tucks; quotes depend on whether liposuction and muscle repair are included.

Will my belly button look different?

In a full tuck the navel is reshaped and brought out through a new opening, leaving a small scar around it. A mini tuck leaves it in place.
