What is Genioplasty (Chin Surgery)?

Genioplasty (턱끝성형) changes the chin's projection, length or width. It is often paired with rhinoplasty because the nose and chin are judged together in profile.

Two main options exist: a sliding osteotomy that cuts and moves the chin bone, and a chin implant made of silicone or porous polyethylene (Medpor).

How it works

Through an incision inside the lower lip, the surgeon cuts the chin bone horizontally, slides it forward, back, up or down, and fixes it with a plate. Removing a wedge shortens a long chin. For mild retrusion, an implant is placed on the bone in a snug pocket instead. Stitches inside the mouth dissolve.

Implants suit small forward increases. Bone surgery is needed to shorten a chin, narrow it, or move it more than a few millimetres.

Will the implant move?

Silicone can shift if the pocket is too large. Fixing it with a screw or using a tight pocket lowers the risk.

Can a chin be shortened?

Yes, by removing a horizontal wedge of bone. An implant cannot shorten a chin.

Will I feel the plate?

Usually not. The plate sits under the muscle and most patients keep it permanently.
