What is Square Jaw Reduction?

Square jaw reduction (사각턱) targets the corners of the lower jaw. It is chosen when a wide face comes from bone rather than from the chewing muscle.

Many patients first try jaw Botox. If the face still looks square after the muscle shrinks, bone surgery is the next option.

How it works

Through an incision behind the lower molars, the surgeon removes a curved strip of bone from the angle and often shaves the outer layer of the jaw to reduce the front-view width. The aim is a smooth curve from ear to chin without a second angle. Drains may be placed for a day.

Should I try jaw Botox first?

If you clench or grind and the muscle feels bulky, Botox every 4 to 6 months may be enough. A CT or X-ray at consultation shows how much is bone.

How much bone is removed?

It depends on your CT, but the goal is a smooth line rather than maximum removal. Over-resection can make the face look long or unnatural.

What is outer cortex shaving?

It thins the outer layer of the jaw to reduce width from the front view, which angle resection alone does not change much.

Are there visible scars?

No. All incisions are inside the mouth and close with dissolving stitches.

When will I look normal in public?

Many patients return to desk work or casual outings after 2 to 3 weeks with mild residual swelling.
