What is Gynecologic Checkup?
A gynecologic checkup screens for cervical changes, ovarian and uterine problems and sexually transmitted infections. Clinics around Apgujeong and Sinsa run walk-in or same-week appointments and many have female doctors.
Visitors often book one while in Seoul because ultrasound is done by the doctor in the same room, so you see the images and get a first reading on the spot.
How it works
The doctor takes a cervical sample for cytology (Pap or liquid-based) and, if requested, an HPV DNA test that types high-risk strains. A transvaginal ultrasound checks the uterus and ovaries for fibroids, cysts or polyps. Add-ons include a breast ultrasound, urine or swab PCR for chlamydia, gonorrhea, mycoplasma and trichomonas, and blood tests for HIV, syphilis and hepatitis.
Who it suits
- Women overdue for cervical screening
- Anyone with irregular bleeding, pelvic pain or abnormal discharge
- People wanting an STI panel with fast PCR results
- Women planning pregnancy or egg freezing who want a baseline scan
Who should skip it or wait
- Acute severe abdominal pain, which needs an emergency room
- People who need a full mammogram, which many small clinics do not have
Side effects and risks
- Light spotting after the cervical sample
- Mild discomfort from the speculum or ultrasound probe
- False positive or negative results that need repeat testing
Aftercare
- Avoid intercourse and tampons for 48 hours before the visit for a clearer sample
- Book outside your period if possible
- Ask for results by email in English
- Bring previous Pap or HPV results so changes can be compared
Planning around your trip
Book in your first days in Seoul so lab results arrive before you fly and any follow-up can be done locally.

Gynecologic Checkup questions
What is the difference between a Pap smear and liquid-based cytology?
Both look at cervical cells. Liquid-based cytology suspends the sample in fluid, which gives fewer unreadable results and lets the lab run an HPV test on the same sample.
Can I see a female gynecologist in Gangnam?
Many clinics in Apgujeong and Sinsa have female doctors. Ask when booking, as schedules vary by day.
Do I need to fast before a gynecology checkup?
Only if blood tests such as glucose or cholesterol are added. A pelvic ultrasound itself needs no fasting, and a transvaginal scan does not need a full bladder.
How quickly do STI results come back?
PCR swab or urine tests usually report within 1 to 3 days. Blood tests for HIV and syphilis can be same-day or next-day at many clinics.
Can I get my results in English?
Lab reports use standard English test names and units. Ask the clinic to send PDFs by email and note any findings in English in the chart summary.
Is breast ultrasound a substitute for a mammogram?
No. Ultrasound is useful for dense breast tissue, which is common in younger women, but it does not show microcalcifications as well. Women over 40 usually need both at intervals their doctor sets.
