What is HPV Vaccine (Gardasil 9)?

Gardasil 9 is the main HPV vaccine offered in Korean clinics. It covers HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58, which cause most cervical cancers and genital warts.

Gynecology, urology and family medicine clinics in Gangnam give it to women and men, often without an appointment.

How it works

The vaccine is an intramuscular injection in the upper arm. People who start before age 15 need 2 doses 6 to 12 months apart. From age 15 the schedule is 3 doses at 0, 2 and 6 months. It prevents new infections and does not clear an infection you already have.

Who it suits

Women and men who have not completed an HPV vaccine series
People with few past sexual partners, who gain the most protection
Expats who can complete the 6-month series in Korea
Those who had the older 2- or 4-type vaccine and want wider coverage

Who should skip it or wait

Pregnancy (postpone remaining doses)
Severe allergy to a previous dose or to yeast
Anyone with a fever on the day (delay the dose)

Side effects and risks

Sore arm, redness or swelling
Fainting shortly after the injection, mostly in teenagers
Headache or low fever for a day
Rare allergic reaction

Sit for 15 to 30 minutes after the shot
Keep your vaccination record for the next dose dates
Continue regular cervical screening
Set reminders for doses at 2 and 6 months

I am 30, is it still worth getting Gardasil 9?

It can be, especially if you have had few partners or have not been exposed to all nine types. Benefit drops with age and past exposure, so discuss your history with the doctor.

Can men get Gardasil 9 in Korea?

Yes. Urology and family medicine clinics give it to men to reduce genital warts and HPV-related anal and throat cancers.

I had Gardasil 4 years ago. Do I need the full Gardasil 9 course?

Some guidelines allow extra Gardasil 9 doses after a completed 4-valent series for broader coverage. There is no single rule, so ask the doctor how many doses they advise.

What if I miss the 6-month dose?

You do not restart. Get the missed dose as soon as you can and the series is still valid.

Is the price per shot or for all three?

Clinics quote both ways. Seoul clinics in 2025 charged about KRW 499,000 to 749,000 for the full adult course, roughly KRW 170,000 to 250,000 per dose.

Do I need a Pap test before vaccination?

No. Testing is not required before the vaccine, but keep up your regular cervical screening because the vaccine does not cover every cancer-causing type.
