What is Melasma Treatment?
Melasma is a hormonal and sun-driven pigment disorder that commonly affects the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. It recurs easily, so Apgujeong dermatologists treat it with a combined plan instead of one device.
A typical plan includes pico or laser toning every 1 to 2 weeks, Sylfirm X for vessel-related melasma, oral tranexamic acid when appropriate, and topical brightening agents.
How it works
Toning gently breaks melanin without much heat. Sylfirm X targets abnormal vessels and the damaged basement membrane under pigment. Tranexamic acid reduces signals that trigger melanin production.
Who it suits
- Cheek and forehead melasma
- Mixed melasma with redness
- Pigment after pregnancy or hormonal change
Who should skip it or wait
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women for some medications

Planning around your trip

Melasma Treatment questions
Can melasma be cured?
It can be lightened a lot, but it often returns with sun or hormonal triggers. Maintenance is part of the plan.
Is tranexamic acid safe?
It is widely used for melasma at low doses, but people with clotting disorders or on hormonal contraception should discuss the risks with the doctor.
Why not use a strong laser to remove melasma faster?
Strong heat can trigger rebound darkening. Gentle, repeated sessions are safer.
How long is a full melasma course?
Usually 2 to 3 months of regular sessions.
Does melasma get worse in summer?
Yes, UV and heat can darken it, so sun protection matters year-round.
Can I continue melasma treatment at home?
Yes. Ask for a written plan with your toning settings and medication so a local dermatologist can continue it.
